The Work
Wavy Clays ceramics are made in small batches using primarily stoneware. Pieces often feature organic designs and raw clay, plus a mix of vibrant glazes, wheel thrown silhouettes and hand-built vessels. Each piece is unique.
Sustainability in the studio
Working with clay, a precious nonrenewable resource, I strive to be mindful of waste and reuse in every step of my process. I reclaim every scrap of clay, recycle the endless stream of junk mail that lands at my door, reuse cardboard boxes, and aim for eco-friendly packaging fill. Any plastic (bubble wrap, air pockets, etc.) in my packaging is reused. I fire my kiln only during off-peak hours to reduce energy use, and even reuse the water collected in my dehumidifier on hot summer days.
My goal is to create a near-zero-waste studio while continuing to make ceramic art that sparks joy, whether for maximalists who love bold, illustrated pieces or minimalists who appreciate clean, functional forms.
The Maker
Wavy Clays is a project encompassing my conversation between body, earth, and memory. I’m Amy, a ceramicist based in Canada, creating tactile, intuitive forms that hold space for both function and feeling.
I’m drawn to the way the body expands in wild places, how our forms soften and open in the presence of trees, tide, stone. In clay, I find a way back to that origin, to the rhythms that continuously shape us. In my work, the vessel becomes a mirror of the body in relationship with the wild: curved, porous, alive.
I also explore ancestral silhouettes, especially those found in Southern European traditions where everyday objects are made by hand, passed down, slowly altered over time. I work to honour those forms while allowing space for interpretation, intuition, and play.
